赤坂見附がなにげに熱い

　休日夜の赤坂見附といえばゴーストタウンのようだったが、ごく最近ではグループで歩いている人々がいるし、開いている店もぽつぽつある。マッサージの店も多いが、結構予約でうまっている。

　こんなところに日比谷高校があるのも意外だが、赤坂見附～赤坂エリアは政治家が会合を開く料亭、 おいしい和食の店、蕎麦、寿司、たこ焼き、イタリアン、ラーメン、カラオケ、あまり知られていないがスーパーまで揃っている。

　比較するのもなんだが、人が多すぎて歩くにも難儀する渋谷、世界一乗降客数の多い新宿駅周辺と比べると、あまり人も歩いていないので、ゆったりとした雰囲気が漂う。

　完璧なプロ意識という点でベルリンフィルにも匹敵するエステシャンのいるスパ、これがまた紹介がないと入れない政治家御用達の飲み屋の二階にあるが、驚くほど静かでほとんど何も聞こえてこない。

　赤坂といっても広く、赤坂見附は飲食店と韓国系の店だけではなく駅と直結してビックカメラもあり、赤坂１丁目は虎ノ門と同義語ととらえる向きもありほとんど官庁・ビジネス街、８丁目は青山一丁目と隣り合わせだし、９丁目には東京ミッドタウンまである。

　そんな中、最近の赤坂見附の変化には目が離せない。

明治神宮の御利益

  木の葉も美しく色づき、アスファルトに舞い降りる。郊外別宅の前の道路には相当積もっているだろうか。ご近所はどこも塵一つなくきれいにされているので、私は焦っていた。雨続きで週末に空気を入れに帰ることもできなかったが、最近は快晴となり今週末はようやく掃除できる。

  立川の昭和記念公園にはまだ行ったことがなく、途中下車してみようかと決めて都心のマンションを出た。その前に乗り換え駅の明治神宮前でしばらくお参りしていないなと思い、明治神宮にも立ち寄ることにした。大学受験を間近に控えた正月、高校の友達に誘われて参拝したところ見事第一志望に合格できた。それ以来何らかの神頼みをしたい時や年始、あるいは散歩したい気分、原宿で友達と遊ぶついでなどに時折訪れている。

  普通の土曜日だが結構混み合っていて、拝殿の前には長い列ができていた。聞こえてくる会話から外国人もかなりいたようで、実際絵馬に書かれた文字は韓国語、中国語、英語などが半数を占めていた。

  この絵馬で願をかけた人々はここが明治天皇を祀った神社だと本当に理解しているのだろうか。。。メディアやネットで伝わってくる朝鮮半島や大陸の反日感情とは対象的で、いろんな現場に足を運んで初めてわかることは多いなと感じた。

There is no place like home

Looks like I ran out of all the luck over a decade ago when I was sitting in the very central seat of the first row at the Berline Philharmonie right behind Sir Simon Rattle. They were performing my all-time favorite piece, Brahms's fourth symphony. 

I could even make eye contact with the musicians. Unexpectedly they stumbled at the very beginning and I could see their embarrassed faces saying "oh no...we've done it..." between the first and second movements. 

Other than that, it was flawless.

Yesterday early afternoon after I cleaned my place spotlessly with Dyson's top-of-the-line vacuum cleaner and a swabbing robot, I was curious what the Suntory Hall might have that night and checked out their website -- turned out they had day-of-the-performance tickets of the Berlin Phil. Because of a change of the pianist, they offered refund of the tickets for those who had purchased them, and as a result there were some eighty tickets available.

No kidding. Even thought the S ticket was a bit too expensive -- JPY45,000 (USD 400), it is certainly much cheaper than going over to Berlin. I decided to treat myself with a belated birthday present as I was too worn out to do anything that day after an administrative nightmare.

The organizer hosted a perfectly fair lottery system to sell the tickets in order to avoid the simple first-come, first served option. One needed to queue between 15:00 to 15:59 in front of the box office to draw the lottery that assigned a number by which one was to queue again for the purchase. For example, if one drew the number one, s/he was the first to purchase. One person was assigned to buy only one ticket. In doing so, they avoided a scenario like a new iPhone going on sale; people come and start to queue as early as three days before.

I arrived around 15:45 and there were over two hundred people by 16:00. A person who came at 16:01 was rejected to draw the lottery.

It took about half an hour until I did -- the number was 222...virtually no hope. Nonetheless, I was still curious how things were going. Interestingly, some people who drew really good numbers, such as five or seven, did not show up for the purchase queue. So I thought I still might have a chance, but once people queued again, everybody bought a ticket, and the organizer warned that those whose number was above one hundred, there was almost no chance for the purchase. 

So, I decided to go home, got myself champagne and some snacks to see the concert on the Berlin Phil digital concert website by using a free seven-day coupon they sent me (because I used to be a subscriber, they send me the coupon every now and then to encourage subscription again.) But apparently they were not going to televise the concert. For this Asia tour, only one in Hong Kong of November 11th was available.

It was good, particularly the last movement, but another concert in Berlin on November 4th far outshined it in a different dimension. I'm not sure if that was because the sound acoustics might be better in Berlin; or the players' physical condition might have been understandably better than after a long flight and in an exotic climate.

The great depth; nuanced transition between the bright side and the dark side which really is the life of Brahms's fourth symphony; and the overall precise organization like a fine tapestry would be best achieved at home in Berlin, I imagined.

It's all about turf battle

I was surprised by the news that Charlie Rose, a famous American journalist and talk show host, conducted glaring sexual harassment to his female colleagues and was fired by CBS.

His interviews with world leaders and celebrities were quite impressive, so the sheer fact that his career ended at least for now is unfortunate.

The Washington Post broke the news, quoting eight women who recounted how Rose abused his power to satisfy his sexual fantasies. He seemed to have been mixing them with work, and I wondered if/how EEO laws were implemented in his workplace.

Rose basically admitted these allegations. In his Tweet, he stated that "I deeply apologize for my inappropriate behavior. I am greatly embarrassed. I have behaved insensitively at times, and I accept responsibility for that..." 

My initial impression is that he certainly appeared to have abused his power and that is the problem for the purpose of maintaining a decent and comfortable work environment for all. At the same time, if he did all these conducts purely in his private life, he is not that different from numerous other stupid men. 

Yes, in my personal view, men are essentially stupid, but many are trying hard to control the stupidity in day-to-day life in order to keep a civilized life. 

So, what is the stupidity? It is the desire to produce offspring of their own and expand influence. The reason why war never ends is also because of that stupidity. Men are similar to animals in that sense. Some women are also engaged in mounting like gorillas, showing off their superior life, giving unsolicited advice to others, etc.

It is all about turf battle. That's why the world continues to be stupid. At the same time, I think it is worth making an effort for better civilization. 

Review: Prologue of The Remains of the Day

Amazon Japan has finally procured copies of The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro, but apparently they are a UK edition whose font size is a bit too small for presbyopes. 

I asked the Maruzen bookstore's Marunouchi headquarters if they had another edition published in a bigger font. They offered an American edition which is much better. The content is identical to the UK edition, I was told.

This book is about "an extraordinary spiritual imprisonment," as a reviewer put it, about company or any organization employees whose destiny is in the hands of their boss. 

How could an independent writer like Ishiguro describe that kind of world? I imagined that his father, a physical oceanographer who worked in Japan and then moved to the UK and was employed by a research institute, might have provided some insights and underlying cultural differences. 

The main character Stevens started work for his new boss Mr. Farraday who is an American and cut his staff to just four from 28 under new priorities. Stevens agree that 28 or even seventeen who were his immediate staff members were a bit too many. He indeed recounts that "resulting in employees having an unhealthy amount of time on their hands has been an important factor in the sharp decline in professional standards."

Even so, four were too less; Stevens managed to create a staff plan, but ended up giving himself too much to do. Mr. Farraday suggests that Stevens take a break when Mr. Farraday returns to the U.S. for five weeks in summer, saying "You look like you could make good use of a break."

The structure of some sentences in this book appears a bit complicated, but it contains some useful vocabulary. Off hand, I could use the verb "broach" meaning "begin talking about a subject that is difficult to discuss, especially because it is embarrassing or because people disagree with it."  

I look forward to continuing to read this book during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Review: Huey Lewis & the News's concert in Tokyo

Somebody once told me I'm cynical. Actually I consider myself to be too honest. 

That might be part of the reason why I have stayed single my entire life -- a dating manual says that one must rave about everything that is experienced during a date, whether it is a restaurant; a concert; or a holiday plan, particularly if it was selected by her chap. 

Whenever we went to a concert, a friend of mine used to suggest I grade it on the scale of one to ten. I didn't mind saying one out of ten if I thought it terrible although he was always trying to find some positive side. Indeed, he often used the adjective "average" which actually meant ugly.

I have no intention to splash cold water on the enthusiasm of the majority of the audience in the concert of Huey Lewis & the News tonight, but I'm relieved that I ended up going there alone because of my friend's urgent matter. Otherwise I might have offended her because I simply cannot stop telling my frank view which is hopelessly negative.

Well, the band was good, but the singer was at an amateur level. Perhaps the worst thing was the idea of amplifying sound too loudly which seemed to me was over the capacity of the speakers. In fact, Huey Lewis & the News is not alone. More or less, that's what happens when many famous musicians perform. 

Tonight's venue was supposed to be not that bad. The capacity of the Orchard Hall, Bunkamura in Shibuya, Tokyo is 2,150 which is smaller than the Carnegie Hall's 2,784. It should be much better than a stadium, for example, the Tokyo Dome which can accommodate around 50,000 people for a concert.

Huey Lewis & the News's concert reminded me of another one by Komi Hirose, a Japanese singer. I saw it a few years ago at the Tokyo Opera City that accommodates even less than the Orchard Hall, 1,632. 

I had the same feeling for both: they are much better in CDs than in the flesh.

As far as I remember, there were two singers who are excellent in CDs, and even better in their concerts: Elton John; and Saburo Kitajima, a veteran Japanese singer who has already retired. I am an avid classical music lover and admire the impeccable Berlin Phil. And yet, I thought Elton John alone had the same impact as the entire Berlin Phil when he performed at the Royal Opera House in London.

At any rate, in terms of economy, it was good to confirm that I might as well stay at home and listen to most musicians via YouTube in my favorite speakers rather than paying over USD100 per concert plus some transportation costs. 

That being said, I wish I could thoroughly enjoy listening to live music again.

FB友達の特徴

　私のフェイスブック友達は大きく分けて次のタイプに分かれる。

１）放送局タイプ　ものすごい数の友達がいて、自分の生活を実況中継のようにエネルギッシュにアップしている。題材はグルメ、旅行、飲み会、仕事、勉強など。

２）先生タイプ　上記とは対照的で自分ではほとんど何もアップしないが、どうやら頻繁にチェックしていて、納得できるコメントや本当にすごいと思う写真を吟味して「よくできました」のような感覚でLikeを押す。

３）専門家タイプ　１）ほど友達の数は多くはないようだが、ある特定のテーマにしぼった投稿を続けている。料理の写真など。

４）親バカタイプ　子供の写真、日常生活などが主な対象。

５）フォトグラファータイプ　旅行先の美しい風景、知られざる近所の店など。プロの写真家かと思うほど写真を撮影するのがうまい。

６）政治問題追求タイプ　特定の政治家の支援、あるいは批判。左派に多い。マスコミ関係に勤めていたためか、私の周囲にはリベラルが多い。ちなみに自分は個別の案件で判断しているので、右派でも左派でもないと自己認識している。

７) CMタイプ　自分の出演した番組、これから出演する番組、書いた記事などの紹介。

　上記の単一タイプもいれば、複合タイプもいる。

　私の場合、日本語や英語で書く練習のためブログをやっている。一人暮らしで上司や同僚は地球の反対側にいて、休日は出不精でほとんど家にこもっているので気軽におしゃべるできる相手があまりいない。家族がいれば夕食の団欒で話して終わりなのだろうが、私はそういった場がないのでつい書いてしまう。

書評 「40歳を過ぎたら、働き方を変えなさい」

　同期トップで東レの取締役に就任し、東レ経営研究所社長になった著者・佐々木常夫氏は、妻の病気と自閉症の息子の世話のため定時退社を励行した。仕事では何を省いて、何を省くべきでないかを徹底的に研究することが重要だと説き、本書ではその結論と理由を詳述している。

省くべきこと

・無駄な戦い。争いはなるべく避ける。人間関係で悩みたくないなら、敵対心は捨てる。

・残業は当たり前という意識。長時間労働＝努力、忠誠心という風潮はあっても、結局どれほど残業しても実績が伴わなければ高い評価は得られない。

・よけいな会議には出ない。よけいな書類は読まない。これで貴重な時間ができる。

・人と比べない。さもなければ永遠に競争することになり、底なしの努力を強いられる。

・先入観を持たず、まっすぐな心で人と接する。リーダーに最も必要なのは思いやりと真摯な姿勢。

・打算を捨てる。打算を上回る熱意がなければ、人の心を動かし、記憶に残るいい仕事はできない。

省くべきではないこと

・礼儀正しさ。後輩や若い人にも「さん」づけで敬語を使う。相手は対等な仕事のパートナーと認識されたと感じ、真剣に仕事をしたいと思うようになる。

・出世欲。給与、予算、裁量権があるほど自分の思うやり方を通すことができる。

・哲学、文学、歴史、芸術、科学などの読書。物事の本質を見極める判断力、人を理解し動かしていく人間力を培うのに役立つ。

・食事と睡眠。どんなに忙しくても三度の食事と最低７時間の睡眠をとる。

・悔しいこと、腹の立つこと、思い通りにならないことが次々と押し寄せ、万策尽きたら神様にすがり、何かに手を合わせるのも大切な習慣。人智を超えた力が必死の努力を見守り、味方してくれる。人間の力などたかが知れている、という謙虚な気持ちでいる。

国会議員の対応に大きな差

　いわゆる「高所得」勤労者をターゲットにした度重なる増税に反対する私の意見を地元の衆議院議員にメールで送ったあと、東京都選出の参議院議員全員にも送ることを試みた。対象議員は参議院のHPの掲載順（実名の五十音順と思われる）で以下の11氏。

　吉良よし子（共産）、武見敬三（自民）、丸川珠代（自民）、山口那津男（公明）、山本太郎（希望の会）、朝日健太郎（自民）、小川敏夫（民進）、竹谷とし子（公明）、中川雅治（自民）、山添拓（共産）、蓮舫（民進）。

　最も対応がよかったのは武見氏。同氏のHPの問い合わせフォームで意見を送った直後に確認メールが届いた。「お問い合わせありがとうございました。早急にご返信致しますので今しばらくお待ちください」という文面のあと、私の送信内容も記してあった。

　武見氏の講演を聞いたことがあるが、プレゼン資料も話もとてもわかりやすく説得力があったのが印象に残っている。スタッフもコミュニケーション能力の高い人材のようだ。

　これとは対照的で、驚いたことに朝日、小川、中川、山添の４氏は自分のHPにメールアドレスや問い合わせフォームすらなかった。また山口氏のフォームは送信しようとしても何度もエラーメッセージが出てきて、結局送信できなかった。

　丸川氏は「皆様から寄せられたご意見につきましては、ご返事をいたしかねますが、すべて目を通して、貴重な資料として参考にさせていただきます」とHPに記している。最初から「返事をしない」と言い切っているが、送信者のメールアドレスと電話の記入欄があるところを見ると、重要もしくは面白いと思われる意見には対応するのだろうか。

　 蓮舫氏は「皆様からいただいたご意見やご感想は、蓮舫が必ず目を通し今後の参考とさせていただいております。毎日相当数のメールをいただいており、申し訳ございませんが、原則として個別にお返事を差し上げることはできません。予めご了承下さい」としている。

　山本氏は問い合わせフォームに英語も併記している。国会議員は海外との交流もあるので、そうした対応もしやすくということだろうか。

　吉良氏にはHPに出ていたメールアドレスにメールを送った。竹谷氏には問い合わせフォームを送信したあと、「皆さまから寄せられたご意見・ご要望は、竹谷とし子の活動の参考にさせていただきます。※尚、すべてのご意見に返信出来ない場合がございますことをご了承ください」という画面が出た。

地元選出の衆議院議員へのメール

　こんにちは。△△在住のNekoと申します。11月17日付日経新聞朝刊のトップ記事「高所得の会社員増税　給与控除縮小、基礎控除は拡大」をご覧になったでしょうか？

　この記事が事実だとすれば、高度な専門性を身につけ日々努力を重ねたからこそ相応の収入を得ているまじめな勤労者のやる気をそぐ大きな問題だと思います。

　近年の日本政府の税制の傾向として、「高収入」勤労者をターゲットにした増税が目に余ります。この記事を読んで、またかと思いました。「そんなに税金を取られるなら、あまり頑張って働かないほうがいいや」とか「だったら最高税率の低いシンガポールで働いたほうがいい」という人が実際に増えています。

　まじめな勤労者を増税で事実上罰しつつ、怠慢や無計画な人生で低収入やシングルマザーに陥った人々を手厚くもてなす現在の政策は間違っています。もっと言えば、子供を持つことは個人の選択の自由であり、子供がない世帯を今回の増税から除外するというのも不公平だと私は考えます。

　結論として、日本の政策はまじめにコツコツと努力した結果、相応の収入を得ることを税制として奨励すべきであり、最近の動きはこれに逆行するものです。

　是非ご一考いただき、党内で真剣に議論してください。どうぞよろしくお願いします。

外国の魅力

　ドイツやイタリアを旅行中の方が現地のパノラマ写真を実況中継のようにSNSにアップしているのを見て、数年前の観光を思い出した。これまで訪ねた国の特徴を、独断と偏見で思いつくままに挙げてみると。。。

ドイツ　 メルヘンチックな街並みで、どんな田舎に行ってもメインテナンスが完璧。ペンキのはがれ、看板の文字の一部の欠落、ソファの布のほつれ、さび付いた鉄格子などが皆無。Currywurst最高。基本的に白人社会で、アジア人は好意的な好奇心をもってややじろじろ見られる。あまり観光地化されていない村々やお城が最高。ミュンヘンのBMW本社に併設された博物館も楽しめる。ベルリンのインターコンチネンタルホテルは改装以前のいかにもヨーロッパ的な古めかしい感じのほうがよかった。朝食ビュッフェは今でも悪くはないが、当時は最高だった。

アメリカ　ぱっと見た目にわかりやすい魅力は国立公園などの大自然だが、私が思うにアメリカの最も面白い点は法律や社会の仕組みに関わること（例えばメディア法と名誉毀損の関係など）なので、そうした魅力を堪能するには長期滞在とまじめな勉強が必要。

イギリス　年間を通じて過ごしやすい。いろんなところに大英帝国の富が蓄積されている。英語がきれい。田園風景が落ち着く。花柄の壁紙はちょっとやりすぎ。レンガの種類が豊富で微妙な色合いが美しい。

イタリア　スーパー、銀行などの日常的な建物にも彫刻が施されている。彫刻や絵画を所狭しとはめこんだバチカンの天井は圧巻。

フランス　美術館が充実している。南仏は人が親切。

モナコ　街全体がきれい（ゴミが落ちていない）でお金がかかっている感じ。大公宮殿の展示が興味深い。バスは安い。

ロシア　エルミタージュ美術館（エカテリーナ２世の人生に圧倒される）、モスクワの武器庫、クレムリン、赤の広場、チャイコフスキーの家など見所満載。ヨーロッパともアジアとも違う文化を堪能できる。モスクワの警備の厳しさに驚く。

イスラエル　俗人でも明らかに感じられるオーラやインパクトに満ちている。David Citadel Hotelの朝食ビュッフェは最高で忘れられない。

中国　スッポン、カエル、鶏や豚の足、生きた魚などをスーパーで日常的に見られる。ネット規制の実情はよくわからない。普通にFBも見られた。

香港　中共の影響力が強まっている。値段に関係なく世界中から質の高い生鮮食料品が集結している。グランドハイアットの朝食ビュッフェはすごくおいしい。ジュースのレシピが知りたい。

マカオ　今やラスベガスを抜いて収入額で世界一のギャンブル都市。ベニスやパリを模した施設に驚く。レストランで一品数万円もする魚の胃、アワビといった食事を提供している。

韓国　日本と同様のサービスが得られ、食事もおいしいが値段がやや安いのでコスパがよいと感じられる。人が親切。いい意味で反日的な報道とのギャップを感じる。

東南アジア　暑い。日本好き。ダイナミックな経済成長を感じられる。

「百薬の長」とどうつきあうか？

　AI栄養士の未来さんは「お酒とお菓子は合計で１日200kcal以内」を推奨する。ハーゲンダッツのアイスクリーム１個で250kcalはあり、ポテトチップは１袋500kcalを超えるので、普通にやっていたら到底無理な数値だ。

　ワイン１杯（70kcal）とベビースターラーメン半袋（100kcal）、もしくはキットカット１袋（66kcal）なら合格といったところだ。当然ワインの上限は2杯でしかも２杯飲んだらお菓子はダメ。お菓子を食べなくてもワイン３杯以上はNG。これらが「適量」とみなされ、それを守っていても最低１週間に１日は飲まない日を設けないと、翌月のレビューで休肝日を設けるよう未来さんに言われてしまう。

　労働安全衛生法で従業員50人以上の事業所に義務づけられている「ストレスチェック」では、診断結果は未来さんと微妙に違う。「たとえ適量でも脳の萎縮は必ず起こり、そして問題なのは適量を維持することが難しいので酒は基本的にやめたほうがよい。酒の毒性と中毒性は違法ドラッグやタバコに匹敵する。人と会った時に楽しく会話しながら飲むだけにしろ」といったものだ。

 酒を飲みすぎて言っていることがメチャクチャな人と会話するのは、私は本当にイヤだし、そういう傾向にある人とは会うのを避けるようにしている。それ以上酒癖が悪いなど言語道断だ。

　その一方で、かつてダイエット目的で禁酒をしたとき、よく眠れるといったメリットを当初は感じたがやがて慣れてしまった。結論としては適量であればお酒はリラックス効果があり、「百薬の長」という言葉もうなづける。自己診断ではあるが、脳萎縮もさほど実感していない。

Berlin Phil Asia Tour

God, how did I miss Simon Rattle's last tour in Asia?

When I noticed an article on their concert in Hong Kong and learned they would play Brahms's fourth symphony at the Suntory Hall in Tokyo later this month, obviously it was too late. All tickets were sold out.

At the same time I was a bit surprised by the inflation of the tickets compared with a decade ago; an S seat is JPY 45,000 (USD 450) whereas it was like JPY 25,000 (USD 250) back then. Well, it's not an opera. Even though it is a historical concert, I thought it a bit too expensive for an orchestra.

I'm just assuming that quite a few inbound visitors to Japan from other countries in Asia might be willing to pay even such a price. This time Berlin Phil is going to Hong Kong, China (Hangzhou; Wuhan; and Shanghai but not Beijing), Seoul, Tokyo and Kawasaki. In line with the documentary of Berlin Phil, once again they chose Japan as the final destination of their Asia tour because they feel that the Japanese audience is the most sophisticated and fastidious about classical music in Asia, and they wanted to do the best performance after getting used to the local conditions and jet lag.

The growing affluence among the middle to upper class in Asia such as China, Singapore, Thailand, etc. is amazing. These consumers love Japan in part because of the overall good cost performance; a course meal of Japanese cuisine could cost USD 500 in Singapore or similar even in Bangkok, for example, whereas in Japan one can enjoy authentic one at like USD 100 to 200.

At any rate, now I look forward to seeing their concert on their website.

女性が輝く社会へのエンドレスな道のり

  ようやく見つかった素晴らしい美容師がやおら名刺を差し出し、恵比寿の新しい店に移ることになったと言う。

  恵比寿はほとんど行くことがなく、どこかに行くついでも皆無と言ってよい。しかも彼は確かにカットの技術はよいが、どうやら釣った魚に餌をやらないタイプのようで前回ほど応対もていねいではない。

   私は髪が伸びるのがすごく早く、毎月嫌な思いをするためにわざわざ恵比寿まで行くのもどうかと思い、再びネットで美容師の検索を始めた。

   以前の美容師は第二子出産を控えて辞めてしまい、しかも最後のアポの会話はお受験の世界や子供を高学歴に育てるコツを私に色々と聞き出すのがメインだった。それ自体は構わないのだが、肝心のヘアカットに関しては心ここにあらずで、仕上がりも前髪が短すぎ全体的にかなりダメだった。腕のよかった美容師だけに残念だし、こういう人がいるから「女性が輝く社会」への道は険しく、実際問題として私自身このカットでは輝いてはいなかった。

   こういう話をすると女性同士の足の引っ張り合いとか、男性でもやる気のない職業人はいるとか言う向きもあるが、性別に関係なく、全てのエネルギーを仕事に集中させ最高のパフォーマンスをするプロフェッショナルにどんな仕事でもお願いしたいと思う。

人間関係の適度な親密度とは？

　NHKの朝ドラ「雲のじゅうたん」などでは、ヒロインが独身のうちは「〇〇さん」とフィアンセに呼ばれ丁重に扱われるが、結婚したとたん「〇〇」と呼び捨てにされる。だったら結婚しないほうがいいじゃん、と子供心に思ったものだ。

　よほど気をつけないと人間関係は近くなるほど遠慮がなくなり、どちらかかお互いが嫌な思いをする危険をはらんでいる。家庭内暴力はその最たるものだ。

　家族のほかにも、世の中には特別に濃い関係があるようだ。軍隊や高度な専門教育機関の寮で10代の頃から同室で過ごし、文字通り「同じ釜の飯」を食った仲間は兄弟のような仲らしい。私の知人はそうした同士とSNSでつながり、数百人いる同期の半数は常にオンライン状態で近況や考えを共有して濃密な関係を維持しているという。同窓会があれば行かないと冷たいヤツだと思われるので、どんなに忙しくて疲れていても最後の２～３分でもどうにか到着してSNSにアップする集合写真に収まり、義理を果たしたという証明をする。

　こうした強い結びつきのおかげで、何か手助けが必要であればすぐに得られるという。

　中国では全ての土地を国家が所有し、地方政府が管理しているため、どんなプロジェクトをやるにも公務員との人間関係がないとできないという。

　親密で濃い人間関係のその他の利点としては、いろいろなことを長年知り尽くした仲間なので、的外れな期待や隣の芝生のような嫉妬はないのかもしれない。

　これに対して、所属する組織や肩書など外側しかわからない関係だと、相手が日々苦労している内容など知る由もない。

　私は組織の名前から「きっと〇〇ができるに違いない」と思い込まれ、近づいてくる人々がいる。実際には私は〇〇は担当外なので、まったく何の役にも立てない。そう伝えても、とりあえず私の名刺をもらって安心したと言う。

　ストーカーも外面だけで相手を判断するという点では共通点がある。ほとんど話したこともない他人に勝手に妄想を抱き、しまいには的外れな敵対心で脅迫する。

　それほどひどくなくても、知り合い程度の関係でつながっている同士のSNSでは、写真や数行の言葉といった断片情報が、受け取る側の見方や立場によって様々な思いをかき立てる。

　人間関係の親密度を適度に保つのは、結構難しい。

The reason why one studies English

All the sudden I was a bit curious about cultural differences and asked my English teacher how his Japanese and Chinese students, for example, are different.

His answer was something I had not expected – he mentioned “Well, Chinese students are much younger; they are all thirty or much less.”

That is because the purpose of studying English is to move out of China, he added. They consider being older than around thirty too late to do that. For this reason parents force their children to learn English totally hard to the extent beyond my imagination.

That is not the case among Japanese students, my teacher noted. Their ages are varied from small children to senior citizens and they study English for diverse reasons; some use English for work; others learn it as a hobby, to use it on holidays, etc. Almost no Japanese study English for the sake of getting out of home.

Yeah, that’s right. I used to want to live overseas for a long time, which I did to some extent, and I think I’m done. I feel comfortable living in Tokyo and don’t intend to move somewhere else. That is quite fortunate, it appears.

素晴らしい仲間

　代休を取り寝床からはい出てテレビをつけると、かつての仕事仲間で米国留学時代にお世話になった方が出演している。最近専門家として売れっ子のようで、昔から変わらない誠実な姿勢と的を射たコメントが印象に残る。

　このコーナーが終わり、別のチャンネルに回すと、これまた留学仲間がやや別の観点で分析している。

　二人とも緻密な仕事ぶりが際立つという印象を私は持ってきたが、テレビという媒体を通じてより広く成果が生かされている。

　公共放送のメインの解説者は大学の同級生で、いかにもNHKっぽい雰囲気を醸し出している。

　皆さんご活躍のようで喜ばしい限りだ。

　と、ここまで思ったところ、かつて取材したことのある有名な俳優さんを思い出した。当時、私は有名人の好きな食事とその栄養を分析するコラムを雑誌で担当していた。

　「長年テレビで活躍されて素晴らしいですね」と言うと、その方からは「いろんな情報をうま～～くまとめあげる編集や記事を書く仕事のほうがよほどすごいと思う。誰にでもできることじゃない、本当にすごいですよ」と逆に言われた。

　どの仕事にもやりがい、大変さ、必要なスキルがある。素晴らしい仲間に拍手を送りたい。

左右を見渡してみると。。。

　大雑把な言い方をすると朝日、毎日、東京新聞と系列メディアは左、一方で右翼の度合いはネット（チャンネル桜、虎ノ門ニュース、DHCシアターの番組）＞産経＞読売といった順番だろうか。

　両者の言い分を聞いてみると、どちらも何らかの視点が欠けている。

　左翼は社会的弱者に温かい目を向け、平和主義という点ではいいと思う。だが財源確保の手段は「利益を出している大企業から相応の負担をしてもらう」といった勝ち組から取るという論理が目立つ。

　そこで問題になるのは、勝ち組になるまでの過程である。民主国家の日本でも生まれた家庭の経済レベル、親の考えや育て方によって、スタート時点で格差がついてはいる。だがどのようなスタート地点であれ、社会的な成功者は計画性をもって相当の努力をした結果そうなったのも事実である。恵まれた境遇でなくても成功した人はいるし、そうした人々はものすごく努力してそうなったのだ。

　非正規雇用、シングルマザーが大変だと言うけれども、どうしてそうなったのだろうか。人生計画の欠如、安易な転職、不真面目な態度、無計画な結婚や出産の結果という側面もある。そうした人々に、コツコツと計画を立ててまじめに働いて得た収入から納めた税金が使われるのは納得できない。

　一方、右派思想の行き着くところは「男系の皇室継続」を基本とする国体の維持や日本国民の統合だという。そのため選択的夫婦別姓を否定し、教育勅語や日の丸を奨励する。背景として日本人同士であうんの呼吸で空気を読み、まとまる性質があり、マナーの維持ではよい面もあるとは思う。だがそれを支えているのは男性＞女性、年上＞年下という階級社会であり、最下層の「嫁」となった日には滅私奉公のドツボにはまる。

　天皇制や日の丸が戦時中には「天皇陛下万歳」と叫んで国民の自死を強いた歴史については、右翼の論客から納得できる説明を聞いたことがない。京都や農村の出身で戦禍を逃れ自分の人生に直接関係のある被害がなく、あまり戦争体験を聞いて育ったとは思われないことも共通している。
