Movie Review: Me Before You

The sophisticated camerawork of the lovely scenery in England and Europe as well as the engaging acting were ruined by the last ten minutes' plot which left a disgusting aftertaste.

In summary, a rich young Englishman became a quadriplegic by being hit by a motorcycle. Pathetic about his destiny, he decided to live for the next six months only and his parents hired a young lady in the neighborhood to take care of him during that time. Although she had a nice boyfriend, she fell in love with the rich man, so did he with her. That did not change his original mind, however, even after their luxurious holiday in an ocean resort. That broke her heart, but she managed to make it to his suicidal death bed in a Swiss mountain for the farewell. He left a will to give her a fortune with which she could purchase a special perfume that he designated in Paris and start a comfortable new life.

While I don't understand the average high Amazon reviews of over four out of five in the U.S., the U.K. and Japan, it is quite interesting to see different details among the three countries.

While Amazon USA has the average score of 4.4 out of 5 from nearly five thousand reviewers, the top review rated the movie the lowest score, 1 out of 5. It was written by a quadriplegic man like the movie's main character; over 2,500 people found it helpful. Indeed, 9% of the reviewers rated it 1 out of 5 which was the highest percentage of the three countries.

Interestingly, this movie, directed by an English director and played by English actors, received the highest average review (4.6 out of 5) in Amazon UK, followed by USA (4.4) and Japan (4.2).

Personally, the movie is creepy because it presents the young lady like Cinderella who enjoyed a fleeting romance and a comfortable life simply because she was lucky to meet the disabled and depressed, but wealthy man.

The surprisingly high reviews might uncover many women's deep psyche. If that is the case, I am certainly a minority. Indeed, the movie was helpful in confirming my top values: independence; perseverance; and creativity.
