"Unluckiest" Sunday

Not sure who decided, but each day in Japanese calendar is assigned certain meaning from the luckiest (“Taian”大安) to the unluckiest (“Butsumetsu”仏滅) in a six-day cycle. Today is supposed to be the unluckiest day – indeed, DPRK launched a missile, more deaths from the Taiwan earthquake are reported, and I received a phone call that a relative passed away.

Basically I don’t want to be pushed around by this superstition, but almost all diaries and calendars show this six-day assignment. Most people appear to choose days to conduct special events based on this system. A classmate selected a “friend-pulling day” (Tomobiki友引) for her wedding. Ironically, though, soon after she confessed her spouse’s domestic violence and overall hopelessly dysfunctional marriage. I personally felt creeped by the idea of Tomobiki. (Whew, nothing whatsoever has occurred to me on that front…)

After all, tomorrow never knows, as they sing. All I can do is just to do my best, on whatever day, worst or best.
