Off the top of my head...
- People are generally friendly, including an immigration officer saying “Welcome to the United States.” Never happened in China or just about any other countries I have visited.
- Tea; pastries; grilled asparagus; oyster samples; the amount of a “glass” of wine — the sizes of food and drinks are quite generous.
- Interesting to compare the West Coast and the East Coast.
- People bear in mind that anyone could have a gun and behave accordingly.
- Conversations could start anywhere with anybody. A hotel doorman asked me if I lived in Boston. That would never happen in Japan.
