最近はこれまでの人生でも極めてまれなストレスフリーの生活を送っているが、どうも刺激が足りない。現在の生活を自己評価してみると、10段階で健康10、言論の自由10。。と続き、刺激２。要するにヒマなのだ。
しかしながら、忙しくて刺激があればいいというものではない。いい刺激はよいが、問題や理不尽な状況といった悪い刺激は時間とエネルギーの無駄になる。
そこで思い出したのが、トルストイ著「戦争と平和」である。和訳でも全５巻、各巻500ページ以上の大作で、私が買ったのは英訳だ。本棚から引っぱり出すと、コンビニの長いレシートを２つ折りにしたものをしおりにしている。日付は2009年12月10日。なんと12年も放置していたのだ。
当時の日記を読み返すと、ロシア文学好きのフランス人の友人に勧められた、とある。原書はロシア語だが、貴族同士の会話はしばしばフランス語で行われたため、原書でもその部分はフランス語で書かれている。私の買った英訳本ではフランス語の箇所は原文ママで、脚注で英訳が出ている（ちなみに和訳本では、フランス語部分も本文の中で日本語に訳している。）露文英訳の賞を受賞した翻訳家による作品で、アマゾンでも英訳の質の高さを絶賛するレビューが目立ったため、英語とフランス語の勉強のために、この本を買ったことを思い出した。
12年の歳月を経てついにヒマになり、この大作に取り組む余裕が出てきた。英訳は分冊ではなく１冊にまとめられているが、それでも細かい文字で1200ページ以上ある。だが１日10ページ読んで４カ月で読了すると思えば達成できそうだ。
まだ５ページしか読んでいないのに書評を書くのもなんだが、のっけからすごく面白い。高評価の英訳だけあって、英語の語彙も豊富で参考になる。イギリス人の先生に解説してもらい、新たに学んだ表現をまとめてみると。。

―> put in と言うと必ずしも行きたくはないが、出席を求められた公式の場に行くというニュアンス。本当に行きたければgoでよい。

Before reading this book, I had felt that my life was insipid.
imbecile: a person that you think is very stupid; a person who has a very low level of intelligence
ulterior: (of a reason for doing sth) that sb keeps hidden and does not admit
Ex) My boss seemed to be an imbecile as he had left his work unfinished for over a decade despite countless reminders, while his Canadian counterpart did it immediately. I wondered if there might have been ulterior political reasons for that.
rapturous: expressing extreme pleasure or enthusiasm for sb/sth
Ex) Americans typically send rapturous Christmas cards that emphasize how perfect their lives are. While I admire their positive attitude, I feel as if I received unsolicited letters of recommendation.
fetter: sth that stops sb from doing what they want
Ex) After leaving the government, I was finally freed from the fetters of all the guidance and talking points.
