とりあえずヒマを満喫する

　コロナに酷暑が加わり、自宅での軟禁生活も半年になる。今月は仕事もせず宿題のない夏休みのようだ。外出する必要はほとんどないので、ウィルス感染や熱中症のリスクは最小限にとどまる。

　PCとモニター、アンプとスピーカーをつないでホームシアターを完成。アマゾンプライムの勧誘がしつこいので、とりあえず無料で１カ月加入する。以前にも入っていたが、年会費の値上がりにともない、そんなに急いで荷物を受け取らなくていいし映画も見ないと思ってやめてしまった。だが再加入の際にも最初の１カ月は無料になる。おとなしくずっと年会費を払い続ける顧客よりも、わがままな消費者のほうが優遇される。自己中心的な人のほうが職場や人間関係で優位に立つ例と似ているかもしれない。 

　米国の弁護士ドラマ「アリー my Love」の初回も無料だったので、懐かしくなり視聴した。主人公のアリーはハーバード大学・法科大学院を卒業後に入社した法律事務所で、先輩の中年男性弁護士のセクハラに遭う。だが会社に訴えたことで退職に追い込まれる。のっけから生々しくイヤな感情がよみがえるエピソードだ。

　大学院の級友が起業した別の事務所に誘われて転職。そこでかつての恋人ビリーも働いていることを知る。彼はアリーと別れた後、ジョージアという名前の女性と結婚していた。

　突如として、全く関係ないモヤモヤが一気に晴れた。というのは、私はかねがねキャロライン・ケネディ前駐日米大使が誰かに似ている。。誰だろう。。とぼんやり思っていた。ジョージアが登場したとたん、長年の疑問が解消した。この役を務める女優Courtney Thorne-Smithと顔や声の出し方など、全体的な雰囲気がすごく似ているのだ。どうでもいいと言えばいい話なのだが、スッキリして気持ちよかった。

　興味深いことに、第２回以降は無料ではなく課金制になっている。一方で別の米国ドラマ「セックス・アンド・ザ・シティ」は全てのエピソードが無料で見られる。「アリー my Love」を理由にアマゾンプライムに入るというより、追加料金を払っても見たいというマニアックなファンのほうが多いのかもしれない。

　最近は午前中にまじめな読書やブログ、午後にホームシアターでドラマ三昧。とりあえずヒマを満喫する生活はかなり快適だったりする。。 

Prime Minister Abe -- comeback kid?

Last evening I was astonished by the breaking news that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe would make an announcement about his resignation.

I watched the entire press conference from five to six p.m. On August 24 he decided to step down due to a recurrence of his chronic ulcerative colitis illness, he said. It was the same reason why he left office during his first term as the premier back in 2007. This time, he looked not so bad.

Chanel Sakura, a conservative online TV program, aired a special round table from midnight. One panelist contended that PM Abe would be the only leader who can deal with difficult countries such as China. Mr. Abe would come back and become the prime minister again at an appropriate time, he hoped. That is not prohibited under Japanese law.

Interestingly, PM Abe seems to have made room for that possibility. Unlike his predecessor PM Junichiro Koizumi, he avoided naming a potential successor. PM Abe will resign for the same reason as before; however, he took back the position again in 2012. 

At that time, he replaced the Democratic Party of Japan's (DPJ) head and PM Yoshihiko Noda. Because the DPJ had been heavily criticized for its clumsy handling of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the subsequent Fukushima nuclear disaster, it faced utter defeat in the general election.

If Mr. Abe's successor cannot take control of the COVID-19 situation, the U.S.-China confrontation or DPRK aggression, a better leader would be needed. Given that Japan had suffered from a shortage of sustainable prime ministers before PM Abe's second term, he might have a good chance of returning to the stage.

Some of the achievements of PM Abe which I appreciate are employment reform and a society where women are able to flourish. In retrospect, it might have been his weakest point -- his illness -- that made these accomplishments possible. Because he had to carry out the demanding job of prime minister while controlling his chronic illness, he needed to find ways to be efficient. Out of this experience, he would have become compassionate with professionals from all walks of life, including working women.

Despite a few scandals, overall he has been a decent leader in my view. I hope he will have a chance to resume his unfinished business.

Review: Hamlet

While watching a 1948 movie version of Hamlet, certain words hit home from my experience for the past few years:

" 'tis an unweeded garden, that grows to seed, things rank and gross in nature possess it merely."

--> I could not help but laugh out loud and remembered a few people who perfectly fall into this category. As such, this truth has remained unchanged for over four centuries. The good news is that leaders like Hamlet's father also exist.

"To be, or not to be, that is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in the world to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing end them?"

--> I did both and left an unweeded garden. In fact, with no metaphor at all, even now I cannot weed my own garden under this scorching weather...

"The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely...the insolence of office, and the spurns that patient merit of the unworthy takes."

--> It's comforting to know that my agony was timeless.

This classic play dissects the ugly human ego through the eye of Hamlet, who represents an upstanding character. It was disappointing that he was killed in the end, but right before that the entire truth was revealed. 

As this is literature, the author might have intentionally included a component that makes the audience somewhat hopeful so that William Shakespeare could encourage them to come back and enjoy his other work. In reality, secretiveness plagues leadership and it is often covered with an ostensibly perfect story. 

At the same time, there are so many really nice people out there. But that may not make very intriguing theatre.

地球温暖化 メディアと個人の責任とは？

 　酷暑の夏が恒例となり、40度を超える気温や熱中症はもはや風物詩となっている。天気予報は危険な暑さを警告し、気象予報士は天気図を使って気圧配置など暑さの直接的な理由を説明する。

　だが地球温暖化という長期的な背景を解説することは、ほとんどない。二酸化炭素など温室効果ガスの増加が主因であることは明らかだが、これを抑制する方法も言わない。環境省の啓蒙活動「クールチョイス」をメディアはほとんど紹介しない。

　これとは対照的に、新型コロナウィルスについては最新情報を詳細に報道し、厚生労働省の「３密回避」政策を頻繁に取り上げる。結果として、日本人で「３密」を知らない人は皆無に近く、街に出れば100％近い人がマスクをつけている。

　コロナの影響を受けた企業や労働者への補償、一律給付金など総額で200兆円を超える国家予算が計上された。その一方で酷暑のため炎天下の工事を延期しても、その間の補償はない。

　人間の性質として、直ちに影響のある事柄に意識が集中する傾向がある。重要な問題ではあるが長期的にじわじわと影響が出る事柄に関しては、つい後回しにしがちだ。ベストセラー書「７つの習慣」はこの現象を図式化し、長期的に影響のある重要な問題について意識的に取り組むことを勧めている。

　地球温暖化の認知度を「３密」レベルに高めることができれば、かなり個人の工夫や努力を促すことができるだろう。

Live like a cat

For the first time in a long time, I woke up following a seven-hour almost straight deep sleep. Having received shiatsu from the massage chair while listening to Brahms's first piano concerto last night might have done the trick.

The morning sunshine poured in as I opened all shutters of my five-bedroom house. According to the weather forecast, it was going to be very hot today at the maximum of 37 degrees (98F.) Global warming has been increasingly intense. 

Even so, I don't need to commute, nor do I have to telecommute. Until a while ago, I had been shackled to the work iPhone serving my boss, similar to a dog chained by its master. Now I have no supervisors. No guidance. No talking points. No flip-flops. No organizational disorganization. No turf wars.

This would be called a stress-free life.

For whatever reasons, being fired is one of the most unpleasant life events. It is like being expelled from school after earning straight As. My boss apologized over and over again and emphasized that the closure of the NOAA Asia office was entirely for a budget concern and had nothing to do with my performance. HR offered generous severance conditions. 

Still, I agonized over what might have gone wrong and if there was anything that I could do to avoid this nightmare. The answer is no, because I did my best and still it happened. 

For now I might as well enjoy life like a cat -- eat, sleep or play whenever I like. 

プータロー 初日

　ニート、リタイア、有閑マダム。。この状態はいったい何だろうか？　完全に自由という意味ではフリーターかもしれないが、コンビニ店員のバイトくらいはやっているイメージがある。

　最近はあまり聞かないが、プータローという表現が合っているかもしれない。

　土日はいずれにせよ休みなので実感はなかったが、月曜となると正真正銘のプータローである。しかし今日はメチャクチャ忙しかった。通勤する必要はなくなったため都心のマンションを引き払い、別宅として使っていた郊外の自宅に引っ越したからだ。

　スピーカーのケーブルを完璧に用意したはずだったが、キャビネットの正しい位置にアンプを置くと足りない。ぎりぎり足りる別の場所に置き、とりあえず配線を済ませる。阿部寛主演のドラマ「結婚できない男」をまねして、和室を無理矢理に洋風のオーディオ部屋にする。

　とりあえずCDプレーヤーに入っていたグリーグのピアノ協奏曲をかける。マンション暮らしの時は、クライマックスになると近所迷惑にならないよう音をしぼっていた。それがもはや必要ない。地域の建築協定で、隣家との境界線から１メートル以上離して家を建てなければならない規則があるため、各戸間の距離は最低２メートル離れている。夕方に雨戸とサッシをきっちり閉めれば、音量調節なしにフルに音楽を楽しめる。

　そうすると今までは聞こえなかった微妙な音が聞こえ、全体的なオーラや繊細さが伝わってきた。６年前に買ったスピーカーがようやく本領を発揮しはじめたのだ。

　ブラームスのバイオリン協奏曲を聴いていると、まるでドイツを旅行しているかのような感覚にとらわれた。高解像度の映像や写真よりも、はるかにリアルでやばいくらいに現地の雰囲気が伝わってくる。コロナ自粛中でありながら、ドイツの夏をドライブしているワクワク感がよみがえり、すごく癒された。

　突如として、メルケル首相がアメリカの大統領だったとしたら、世界情勢も私の職場環境もここまでメチャクチャなことにはならなかっただろうと思った。物事の合理性や精緻さでドイツ人は抜群である。ドイツ人がトランプのような人物を国のトップに選ぶとは到底思えない。

　振り返ってみれば、ヒラリー・クリントン国務長官の時代は最高だった。野生生物保護や気候変動に熱心に取り組み、米国大使館で情報収集や各国とのコンタクトづくりに不可欠な現地採用職員の重要性を理解し、世界中の現地職員が情報交換をするプラットフォームを立ち上げた。2016年の大統領選でヒラリーが大統領になっていれば、世の中ははるかによい方向に向かっていただろう。

Freedom of Speech

Developed democracies advocate freedom of speech – in theory. In practice, that is often not the case. If you work for an organization, you must abide by its rules and you are normally not allowed to criticize your employer. You have to stick to their policies and talking points not to bring the company into disrepute.

This applies to a country whose First Amendment of the Constitution says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peacefully to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

As a locally employed staff member at the American Embassy in Tokyo, I worked ultimately for the U.S. President, currently Donald J. Trump. Sixteen years ago when I started this job, upon instruction from HR I swore that I would not participate in protests against the U.S. Government.

Yesterday I left the workplace and became a free citizen.

I believe that free speech is vital to reveal the truth and ensure democracy. I would like to exercise this rare opportunity that I have finally obtained in order to realize a decent world.
