この２～３年慢性的な疲れが取れず、年齢的なものかとあきらめていた。
だが最近ある方に、「自発的に何かをやり始めて、その後にグッタリということはないですか？」と聞かれた。
そう考えてみれば、休暇中に政治関係の分厚い英文の本を一気に読んだり、庭の物置を全部片付けたり、このブログを頻繁に更新した時期と、どうしようもない疲れを感じ始めた時期には相関関係があった。
つまり、自らの首を締めていたのだ。他人からああしろ、こうしろと言われたのではなく、自分の意志でやっているので、よけいに夢中になりすぎるのかもしれない。
自分を客観視するのは難しいが、他人と話していて、この人は自らの首を締めているなと感じることはある。
例えば、アラフォーになる独身女性が今すぐにでも結婚・出産して親を安心させたいといと言う。だが30近くの頃に、条件のよい彼氏からのプロポーズを断った、とも。どうして断ったのかと聞けば、「自分はまだ若いと思った」。
一体この人は何をやってるんだろうか。
彼女を含めエンドレスな愚痴を垂れ流す人の言うことを聞いていると、自ら愚痴の原因を招いている。非現実的かつ多すぎる数の理想を追い求め、それは無理じゃないのと常識的に思う。端的に言えば世の中をなめていて、自分の実力を過信している。だが本人はそれに気づいていない。
大雑把な言い方をすれば、20代の頃にモテた理由は輝く肌であり、その後アンチエイジングであがいて美魔女になったとしても、「お若く見える」だけであり本質的な若さではない。
日本は女性の若さだけを重視する価値観があるが、若さを失った後は別の価値で勝負することになる。経験、専門性、常識、分別、感性、頭のよさなど。そうした別の価値が認識される環境に身を置くことも重要だと思う。
いずれにせよ、鏡を見ただけでは自分を直視することが難しいので、客観的な視点はありがたい。

Vienna Phil's wise decision
Following a fierce battle, I've managed to secure a ticket for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's Japan tour slated in November.
The seat is in my favorite zone behind the stage where the audience are able to see the face of the conductor. Despite the proximity to the stage, tickets there are relatively cheap C or D, as opposed to S tickets that could exist dozens of rows away from the stage. I personally feel that the "P" seats in that zone at the Suntory Hall, the venue of the concert, are quite cost effective.
I had known that people registered at the Hall's website were entitled to purchase tickets earlier than others from 10:00 am today. I wrote that down in my diary, but somehow remembered that at nearly 11:00 am.
"Oh no..." I rushed to the website, only to find all tickets had been sold. Then I refreshed the page over and over again in a slight hope that somebody might cancel their tickets for some reason. After a number of attempts, I found a seat that became available in the P area and immediately got it.
Back in 1999, I saw Vienna Phil perform at the Carnegie Hall in New York. They played my all-time favorite piece, Brahms's fourth symphony. I could see they were one of the top two orchestras in the world along with Berlin Phil and appreciated the sophisticated presentation of the music. That being said, I also thought it was a bit too upbeat for the piece which consists of a lot of in-depth intricacies; they make the masterpiece profoundly deep and as a result inherently dark.
Because Brahms had felt pressured to produce something else than Beethoven did, he took a decade to compose his first symphony. Seeking relief from the tremendous stress after finishing writing it, he went on a holiday in a mountain resort in Austria; there he was inspired by the beautiful nature to write up the second symphony within only two months. It reflects the pleasant spring time representing his optimism, making a sharp contrast with his fourth and last symphony.
From the concert in New York, I intuitively thought that Vienna Phil should be much better at cheerful music, and I am very glad they have chosen the piece which I believe is best suited of all the Brahms's work for the world class orchestra in their upcoming Japan tour.
I very much look forward to listening to Vienna Phil's performance of Brahms Symphony No.2 from my favorite seat.

"Next time" is now
A colleague left us after nearly three decades of dedicated service. At a farewell, she remarked:
"I was always busy, busy, busy...when I learned how to wear kimono, friends in the same class suggested us to go to Asakusa wearing kimono, but I always said 'I'm busy, next time!' Then I forgot how to wear kimono...Now I won't say 'next time' anymore; now is the time to do what I had missed."
People often ask those who retire a bit early what they would do, but I guess this colleague nicely summarized the point. Right now I'm lucky that I'm paid by thoroughly enjoying what I do, but I do understand what she had to say.
Work inevitably involves ups and downs; and earning money is a serious business. Then if you look at Hotel Okura, it is full of bourgeois ladies who wear nice dresses, chat and giggle over afternoon tea.
By contrast, we follow ever-changing regulations and policies; take all the trainings on cyber security; harassment awareness; and travel arrangement; receive complaints; field questions from people including a few nutsy ones.
I celebrate my colleague's decision and wish her luck with the "next time."

別荘を持つメリット・デメリット
あるネット掲示板でアラサーの独身女性が「軽井沢で安く売り出されている別荘をキャッシュで買いたいが、どう思うか」という相談をしている。
年１・２回しか行く予定がないらしく、この例はさすがにコスパが悪すぎるとは思う。大半の回答は維持費や手間を考慮してやめろというものだ。
別荘に限った話ではないが、一戸建てのメインテナンスは金銭面のみならず予想以上の手間隙がかかる。屋根、外壁、水道管、水周りのリフォーム、庭の木など次から次へと手入れや修理が必要となる。風通しや布団干し、庭の手入れは最低でも月１回、夏場は２～３回はする必要があり、自分でできなければ管理会社に委託して別途費用がかかる。
複数の業者を呼んで作業内容を尋ねると、同じ問題にもかかわらず解決方法やコストが見事に千差万別である。一体誰を信じていいのかわからず、結局は素人の自分が警察官のように徹底的に尋問して矛盾点やおかしな点がないかを洗い出し、最終的に予算と相談したうえで自分で判断するしかない。
こうした仕事のような作業のため週末がつぶれる。お金持ちなら執事を雇ってお終いなのだろうが、 そうした富裕層は総人口の0.01％もいないだろう。
だが別荘にはホテルとは別物のメリットがある。件の掲示板では少数だが賛成意見もあった。「独身を貫き自由に生きたいとなると、別荘は心の拠り所となり仕事の励みにもなる。別荘があれば夫なんて要らないかな」「別荘とホテルを同列に扱うのは間違っている。別荘はカタログ的な華やかさとは無縁、自然や自分の内面と向き合う場だ」
長いこと人生をやっていると人間不信に陥ることもある。多くの人々は結婚して子供を持ち家庭中心の生活になり、独身者とは価値観や生活のペースが変わる。昔は100％理解しあえた友達でも、それが永遠に続くわけではない。
頑張って働いてある程度の結果を出せば、肩書から〇〇ができるに違いないと妄想して近づいてくる人々もいる。親戚や旧友からもそうした扱いを受けるとげんなりする。国家から税収入のターゲットにされるのは言うまでもない。
そうした中、独身のプロフェッショナルこそ別荘を持つ意味がある。
仕事場から物理的に距離を置くことで、日常生活から完全なブレイクを取ることができる。ホテルはチェックアウトの時間に縛られ、所有物は全て持ち帰なければならず、気に入った部屋でも翌日は他人のものだ。別荘には自分の都合に合わせて予約なしにいつでも戻ってくることができる。
親から戦争体験を聞いて育った感覚では、不安定な国際情勢で戦争になれば狙われるのは都心部であり、いつでも避難できる場があるのは安心材料にもなる。
草取りは大変でも、ひょっこり現れるカマキリや防草シートを突き破って生えてくる雑草と出会い、自分は一人ではないと実感する。こうした生物は口八丁手八丁の業者、他人にたかることばかり考えている手合い、価値観が変わり話のかみ合わなくなった友達、心変わりしつつあることを隠すために見え透いたウソをつく交際相手、的外れなライバル心に燃えてマウンティングしてくる知己ではない。
ここまで厭世的でなくても、世の中のペットブームには多少なりともこうした感覚があるのだと思う。自然環境の豊かな別荘では、敷地内の全ての生物が自分を癒してくれる放し飼いのペットなのだ。

Japan's "B-class" gourmet diners provide Super-A taste
"Life can be wonderful if you’re not afraid of it. All it takes is courage, imagination…and a little dough", said Charlie Chaplin.
I generally agree, and would like to add that a good amount of dough certainly leverages courage and imagination. That's why rich parents send their children to good school.
If you live in a country that values cost performance, you're very lucky, too.
In that sense, I feel absolutely privileged living in Japan regarding food. I guess that is because people have infinite energy to pursue tasty food; somewhat similar to English people's passion for their "castle", i.e., home.
When I lived in London, I noticed many TV programs on properties. In Japan, we have many TV programs on good restaurants of reasonable prices.
I love what we call B-class gourmet diners which offer affordable but tasty casual food. These kinds of chains provide super A-class taste in a systematic manner. One example is Takoyaki, fried octopus dough ball in the same size as a golf ball.
Of all the Takoyaki shops that I know, Gindaco, a relatively new chain established in Eastern Japan in 1997, is the best. For the excellent cost performance, they have prevailed in Asia and beyond. I have not observed comparable foreign food chains that succeed in Japan.
As such, Japanese B-class gourmet diners are the trend setter that captures the heart of the growing middle class in Asia, particularly China; Hong Kong; and Thailand.
